NACM brings Toolkit to ICM 2014 Congress!

Nathalie Pambrun and Rachel Olson present Aboriginal Midwifery Toolkit during the 30th Triennal Congress of the International Congress of Midwives!

Nathalie Pambrun and Rachel Olson gave a presentation during the Triennial Congress which was held in Prague in June 2014. Their presentation was entitled “Diversity, development and democracy: the National Aboriginal Council of midwives’ approach to midwifery care for Indigenous communities.” During this presentation, they discussed the work that NACM has been accomplishing over the years, to bring Aboriginal midwifery care and birth back to communities. In particular, the Aboriginal Midwifery Toolkit was shared with the global midwifery community. This presentation was very well attended, and provided a wonderful opportunity to network with midwives from across the world.

Aboriginal Midwife Darlene Birch wins Oscar Lathlin Memorial Award!

We are delighted to share that one of our respected NACM members, Darlene Birch, will be receiving the Oscar Lathlin Memorial Award during the Keeping the Fires Burning Honouring Ceremony and Dinner on June 19th in Winnipeg! This will be in recognition of her lifelong dedication to Aboriginal women and families in Manitoba.

Darlene Birch is a renowned educator and preceptor, as well as a respected Elder and midwife. She was one of the key people involved in the creation of the Kanaci Otinawawasowin Program at the University College of the North (UCN), a unique midwifery training program blending Aboriginal and Western midwifery knowledge. Since 2006, she has been working as a midwife in the Kinosao Sipi Midwifery Clinic in Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba. In spite of being a solo practitionner, she has been providing prenatal and postnatal care to over 80 families per year, in addition to well woman care and outreach with teenagers in the community.

We would like to sincerely thank Darlene for being such a wonderful role model for Aboriginal midwives and families alike! Congratulations Darlene!
